Resultant upward force on cork \(= \sqrt{(\rho - d) g}\)

This causes elongation in the spring. When the lift moves down with acceleration a, the resultant upward force on cork \(= \sqrt{(\rho - d)(\bar{g} - a)}\) which is less than the previous value. So the elongation decreases.
